UBC professor recognized by NASA
Physics and Astronomy Prof. Mark Halpern received the NASA Group Achievement Award for his work on the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission, contributing to the NASA Satellite Mission. This award recognizes the coordination of many individual efforts and contribution to the accomplishment of the NASA mission.

Changes and nominations at UBC Theatre
Theatre, Film and Creative Writing Prof. Jerry Wasserman is the Acting Head of the department as Prof. Robert Gardiner goes on a year of administrative leave.
Theatre’s Program Chair Assoc. Prof. Stephen Heatley is currently directing the European premiere of Chemistry Nobel Laureate Roald Hoffman’s Should’ve – a play about the social responsibility of scientist and artists – at the 41 Annual International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Congress in Turin, Italy. This play will kick off UBC’s Celebrate Research Week in March 2008 as part of UBC’s Centenary program.
UBC MFA Directing Alumni Dennis Garnham and Valerie Methot and Adjunct Prof. Kim Collier are nominated for this year’s Siminovitch Prize, the largest theatre arts award in Canada. The award will be presented in October to a professional director whose body of work has advanced Canadian theatre. For more information, visit www.siminovitchprize.com.
Alumni Alan Brodie, Nicola Cavendish, Phillip Clarson and Morris Panych are nominated for the Betty Mitchell Awards, presented in August. These awards celebrate excellence in Calgary’s professional theatre community and are named for Dr. Betty Mitchell, a pioneer of that community. UBC student-athletes make headlines at Pan American Games
Swimmer Annamay Pierse won silver medals in the 100 and 200-metre breaststroke, breaking the longest standing Canadian record of 19 years in the latter race. She also helped the medley relay team to a silver, while Scott Dickens won gold in the 100 breaststroke and alum Liz Collins was part of the freestyle relay teams that won a silver and a bronze.
In rowing, Nathalie Maurer won gold in the quad and silver in the pairs, and the Canadian men’s field hockey team, including current T-Birds Anthony Wright and Scott Tupper and alum Mike Mahood, won gold to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Public events at UBC on Aboriginal education
The Faculty of Education and Indigenous Education Institute of Canada continue the series Indigeneity today and how to make it matter in education with a day conference on July 28 and the closing seminar Aug. 2 as part of the Summer Scholars in Residence 2007 program. Both free events will be held at the First Nations House of Learning; registration is requested at ogpr@interchange.ubc.ca.
