RSC honours UBC faculty

Seven UBC professors are among the 80 new Fellows elected by the Royal Society of Canada: The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada (RSC), effective upon acceptance:

Physics and Astronomy Prof. George Sawatzky received the Henry Marshall Tory Medal from the RSC for his work in the field of orbital physics. The Henry Marshall Tory Medal is for outstanding research in a branch of astronomy, chemistry, mathematics, physics, or allied science.

The RSC is the senior national body of approximately 1,700 Canadian scientists and scholars selected by their peers for contribution to the natural and social sciences and the humanities. Its primary objective is to promote learning and research in the arts and sciences.

Three new leaders in the Faculty of Science

Computer Science Prof. Anne Condon, Computer Science, is now the Assoc. Dean, Faculty Affairs and Strategic Initiatives. Prof. Nimal Rajapakse is the newly appointed director of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems, succeeding Prof. Rabab Ward, director for more than 10 years. Prof. Rachel Kuske, Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics, is the new head of the Department of Mathematics, taking over from Prof. Brian Marcus.

The Office of the Vice President, Research is asking for nominations for the 2007 UBC faculty research awards and prizes. Killam Faculty Research Fellowship applications are due Sept. 15; other award applications are due Oct. 15.

Public events at UBC on Aboriginal education

The Faculty of Education and Indigenous Education Institute of Canada will host three public events July 23 – Aug. 2 as part of the Summer Scholars in Residence 2007 program. The theme of the series is: Indigeneity today and how to make it matter in education. The opening symposium will take place July 23, followed by a day conference July 28 and a closing seminar Aug. 2. All events will be held at the First Nations House of Learning. Events are free, but registration is requested at ogpr@interchange.ubc.ca.

BC Cancer Agency offers public forums on cancer care

The BC Cancer Agency will host a series of public forums at its regional cancer centres to gather feedback about cancer care in B.C. The information collected will be incorporated into a submission for the provincial government’s Conversation on Health, an initiative to improve public health services.
