UBC bikes to work
UBC teams who participated in the recent Bike to Work Week achieved top ten status in the number of commutes, kms cycled, and participation rates in three of four categories. 591 teams, 3,545 participants and 912 new commuters citywide cycled to work, conserving 33 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Dean of Graduate Studies appointed
Dr. Barbara Evans will assume the duties of Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in mid-November. Evans obtained her B.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne, where she is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training) and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
Evans’ research is in comparative physiology and biology. She has held research appointments in laboratories around the world, including UBC’s Department of Zoology. Her work incorporates interdisciplinary approaches from histology , biochemistry and organ physiology to the physiology of freely-moving animals and animal behaviour. She is widely published, and has taught across all levels to science students and to students enrolled in Medical, Veterinary Science and Pharmacy courses. In collaboration with colleagues in Botany and Genetics, she was responsible for the planning and development of curriculum and course structure of a number of first year Biology courses.
UBC professor receives Angie Award for Best Screenplay
Assoc. Prof. Lance Rucker, Dentistry and Tim Perrin, a Kelowna lawyer, have won an Angie Award for Best Screenplay at the International Mystery Writers’ Festival in Kentucky for Albatross, a romantic political thriller. It was one of five new screenplays selected from nearly a 1,000 submissions from around the world.
This was the inaugural year for the International Mystery Writers’ Festival, and will be an annual event. The awards are named for Oscar, Tony and Emma award winner, Angela Lansbury. For more information, visit www.newmysteries.org.
Bipolar disorder consumer education night
UBC’s Mood Disorder Clinic, Department of Psychiatry and Institute of Mental Health will present a review of medication and self-management strategies for consumers and their families on Tues., July 10 from 7-9 p.m. in the Theatre at UBC Robson Square. Registration can be made prior to July 10 or at the door; suggested donation is $5.
