Sauder announces four Honorary Fellows

As part of UBC’s Sauder School of Business’ 50th anniversary celebration earlier this month, four business leaders were named Honorary Fellows in recognition of their high standards of leadership in their respective industries. They are: William Robert Wyman, former UBC chancellor and former chairman of Suncor, Finning and B.C. Hydro; Hassan Khosrowshahi, Chairman of Inwest Group of Companies; Robert Lee, former UBC chancellor and founder and chairman of the Prospero Group, and Donald Rix, Clinical Assistant Professor Emeritus and chairman and co-founder of MDS Metro Laboratory Services.

Journalism professor receives CAJ President’s Award

Prof. Stephen Ward, director of the Centre for Journalism Ethics at UBC’s School of Journalism, was given the President’s Award at the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) 2006 Awards last week. This award is in recognition for his contribution to the promotion and protection of ethics in journalism.

CAJ is a professional organisation with a mandate of public interest advocacy and professional development for journalists.

Two UBC professors receive Killam Faculty Teaching Prize

Assoc. Prof. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, Education and Counselling Psychology and Special Education, and Prof. Patricia Duff, Language and Literacy Education, have won the 2006/07 Killam Faculty Teaching Prize. This award is given annually from the Killam Endowment Fund to faculty nominated by students, colleagues and alumni in recognition of excellence in teaching.

UBC professor to receive Order of B.C.

Dr. Max Cynader, director of the Brain Research Centre, joins 13 other recipients on June 14 to receive the Order of British Columbia. The Order of B.C. is the province’s highest honour for outstanding achievenment.

CIO to undertake information technology research in Europe

Ted Dodds, UBC’s chief information officer and associate vice-president for information technology (IT), will join Richard N. Katz, vice president of EDUCAUSE and founding director of its Center for Applied Research (ECAR), in a four-month research effort in Europe. They will work with national and pan-European organizations to study how European universities address IT security, identity management, e-scholarship and academic analytics. In 2008, Katz and Dodds will be joined by ECAR Fellow David Damassa, professor and dean for IT at the Tufts University School of Medicine, for research in the Asia-Pacific region.

EDUCAUSE is a non-profit association for the advancement of higher education through the promotion of the intelligent use of information technology. ECAR, the research organization within EDUCASE, was established in 2001 to promote effective IT decisions in higher education.
