B.C.’s top high school math students will be at UBC tomorrow to celebrate the province’s second-place ranking in the 2007 Euclid Mathematics Contest, a national exam based on Grade 12 curriculum.

Ontario ranked first with 85 of the Canada’s top 128 students and 31 of the nation’s top 52 high schools. B.C. won second with 28 students and 16 schools making Euclid’s individual and group lists. Fifteen students and 5 schools from other provinces rounded out the lists.

St. George’s Secondary and West Vancouver Secondary are the only two B.C. schools to rank in the national top ten, placing 9 and 10 in Canada, respectively.

“Up until 2006, the performance of B.C. students relative to those in Ontario had been deteriorating in recent years,” says UBC Math Prof. Mark MacLean, B.C. coordinator of the Euclid contest. “This is the second consecutive year of strong B.C. performances. Given B.C.’s population compared to Ontario’s, the number of B.C. schools in the top 52 is especially encouraging.”

The public school system has produced most of the province’s top math students, MacLean says. “Of the 28 B.C. students that made the national list, 25 are from public schools and just three are from private schools.”

The percentage of B.C. students on the Euclid’s national list was 22 per cent, the same as 2006, compared to 13 per cent in 2005, 20 per cent in 2004, 18 percent in 2003, 25 per cent in 2002, 27 per cent in 2001 and 41 per cent in 2000.

More than 3,200 contestants from 175 B.C. schools signed up for the exam on April 17, along with almost 8,500 from Ontario, and 2,000 from the rest of Canada.

The top 71 B.C. students and teachers from the top schools are invited to UBC for a special day of activities on May 31, 2007.  Many of the Grade 11 and 12 students with exceptional results will be offered special UBC scholarships in recognition of their achievement.
