School of Nursing adjunct professors receive nursing excellence awards

Heather Mass and Irene Goldstone each received the Award of Distinction in Nursing from the College of Registered Nurses of B.C. earlier this month.

This award recognizes registered nurses who excel in areas of nursing practice that include administration, education, or research. Recipients are recognized experts in more than one field of practice, such as health promotion, counselling, teaching nursing theory or practice, and coordinating health care services.

The College of Registered Nurses of B.C. is the regulatory body for more than 36,000 registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and licensed graduate nurses in B.C

$7.5M given to Institute of Mining Engineering at UBC

UBC’s mining engineering program, the only one of its kind in B.C., has received $7.5M from the Province to expand faculty and increase student spaces at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. Teck Cominco and partners have also committed $7.5M in support of the Institute.

Jabulani Afrosummer Fest to raise funds for students

The Jabulani Afrosummer Fest is a fundraiser evening of cultural performances, food, musicians and DJs on May 26 at the Eastburn Community Centre. The festival is an initiative of UBC students, World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the South Sudanese Association of B.C’s Tutoring Program. The evening’s goal is to boost awareness of the importance of access to education and raise support for WUSC’s Student Refugee Program, in which UBC participates.

Chakai at Nitobe Garden

The Urasenke Tankokai Vancouver Association will host an early summer Chakai (Japanese tea ceremony) at UBC’s Nitobe Garden’s Ichiboan tea house and the Asian Centre’s Wakoan tea room on June 2. The Ichiboan tea house offers tatami mat floor seating, while the Wakoan tea room has chairs.

Buddhism and modern society

On May 31, UBC’s Institute of Asian Research addresses the significance of Buddhism in a lecture by Prof. Guang Xing on The Relevance of Buddhism to Modern Society. Xing is a Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation visiting professor from the Centre of Buddhist Studies at the University of Hong Kong.

Johns leads list of 14 T-Birds headed to World University Games

Brian Johns leads a list of 14 UBC Thunderbird swimmers on Canada’s 33-member team at the World University Games this August in Bangkok, Thailand.

There are 11 other current Thunderbird swimmers on the team, as well as two recent graduates of UBC. Athens Olympian Scott Dickens; Jordan Hartney, Canadian record holder; Matt Hawes, Sydney Olympian; Matt Huang; Sandy Lockhart; Callum Ng and Darryl Rudolf join Johns on the men’s side, while Tara Ivanitz; Michelle Landry; Caitlin Meredith and Annamay Pierse are T-Bird women bound for Bangkok. Thunderbird alumni Liz Collins, a former Pan Am Games competitor, and Sydney Olympian Kelly Stefanyshyn will also compete.
