UBC bestows honorary degrees
UBC Vancouver’s spring congregation will take place
May 23 – 30. Undergraduate and graduate degrees from all
12 faculties will be conferred at 23 ceremonies. In addition,
the following eight people will receive honorary degrees:
- Michael Bliss, historian of Canadian
medicine and professor emeritus at the University of Toronto - David Dodge, Governor of the Bank
of Canada - Michael Halliday, linguist and professor
emeritus at the University of Sydney - Cassie Campbell-Pascall, former captain
of Canada’s two-time gold medal-winning women’s
hockey team and CBC rinkside reporter - Robert Davidson, Haida artist known
for his interpretation of the traditional art of the Pacific
Northwest - P.J. (Jim) Peebles, cosmologist and
Albert Einstein Professor of Science at Princeton University - Martha C. Piper, President and Vice-Chancellor
of UBC from 1997 to 2006 - C.S. (Buzz) Holling, Canadian ecologist
and professor emeritus at the University of Florida
UBC Okanagan will hold its spring congregation June 8.
Ecotrek receives worldwide attention
Worldwatch Institute has nominated ecotrek for one of 17
World Clean Energy Awards (WCEA) in the category of construction.
The WCEA were launched earlier this month to recognise projects
worldwide which implement the broad-based use of renewable
energies and energy efficiency concepts. The program was
developed by the Swiss-based Transatlantic 21 Association.
Ecotrek is a project undertaken by UBC’s Office of
Sustainability to reduce energy, water use and greenhouse
gas emissions at UBC through a cost recoverable method known
as Energy Performance Contracting. The project involved
rebuilding and retrofitting the infrastructure of nearly
300 academic buildings, and to date has helped reduce core
campus energy use by over 20% and water use by 30%.
The WCEA winners will be announced on June 15 in Basel,
Switzerland.

Education professor named a top
media contributor
Curriculum Studies Prof. Wayne Ross has
received the 2007 Media Contributor of the Year Award from
the Association of the B.C. Deans of Education (ABCDE).
This award recognises Ross’ contribution to the media
as a commentator and journalist in his area of expertise-school
curriculum and teaching.
ABCDE represents the nine provincial teacher education
programs. Their mission is to enhance cooperation among
B.C.’s teacher education programs and other educational
stakeholders, and promote the exchange of ideas around educational
opportunities for B.C.’s children.
UBC and explorASIAN present Dadawa
The 2007 explorASIAN grand finale concert features international
world music artist, Dadawa, at the Chan Centre on May 31.
Dadawa’s music is a blend of contemporary world music
and traditional sounds of Asia.

T-Birds bound for Rio
Four current members of the UBC Thunderbirds swim team
and a recent alum have been named to Canada’s roster
for the 2007 Pan American Games, July 13 – 29, in
Rio de Janeiro. Swimming Canada announced a 28-member team
built of both veterans and young up-and-comers. Senior Caitlin
Meredith, third-year Annamay Pierse, fourth-year Scott Dickens, and rookie Matt
Hawes will join former T-Bird Liz Collins in Rio.
Canada won 12 medals at the 2003 Pan Am Games. Their top
opponents in Brazil are expected to be the Americans, who
have a similar style team.
