UBC professor recognised for research contribution

Prof. Joanne Weinberg, Dept. of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, has received the Henry Rosett Award from the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Study Group. The award recognizes an individual’s contribution to the field of alcohol-induced teratology, the branch of science concerned with the production, development, anatomy, and classification of malformed fetuses.

Faculty of Medicine presents awards

UBC’s Faculty of Medicine hosted its annual awards evening earlier this month, celebrating the achievements of more than 200 faculty and staff members in the areas or research, teaching, administration, innovation and public service.

UBC professor to serve on the Medical Council of Canada

Anthropology Research Assoc. Dr. Dan Small has been nominated to serve as a member-at-large to the Medical Council of Canada, the licensing body for physicians in Canada. His four-year appointment, beginning in November, will be ratified at the annual meeting in October.

Small received his PhD in anthropology from UBC, with a focus on medical anthropological research in families with hereditary colon cancer. He has served as a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C., as an instructor in the Doctor, Patient, and Society courses in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, is currently a director of the Portland Hotel Society, and supervises Insite, the safe injection site in the Downtown Eastside.

UBC engineer nominated for distinction

Assoc. Prof. Elizabeth Croft of Mechanical Engineering is nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction Award, honouring activities and achievements contributing to the well-being and future of our community. Croft has earned significant awards for her research and service, including the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers’ Award for the Support of Women in the Engineering Profession.

UBC student on the move

UBC Okanagan student Laura Mandelbaum will join 29 students from 17 universities across Canada to spend this summer on a volunteer placement in Africa, Southeast Asia or South America through Students Without Borders (SWB), a program offered through World University Service of Canada (WUSC).

SWB connects postsecondary students to volunteer work opportunities with WUSC’s local partner organizations and field offices in various developing countries. Students are able to earn credits towards their degree or write a case study on their experience.

UBC students set to inspire teens

On May 12, the student-led club Students Taking Initiative UBC is hosting a one-day conference for teens, entitled Engaging Leadership in Teens. The conference is for youth and by youth, and focuses on instilling confidence and skills that will help teens to succeed beyond secondary school.
