UBC Faculty of Education celebrates 50
years
UBC’s Faculty of Education has provided leadership in teaching,
scholarship, research, and service for half a century. To
acknowledge this landmark, the Faculty will be hosting a
wide range of events, such as the Opening Ceremony on March
30, a public forum March 31, and a 10/5K Run and 2K Walk
for Education on April 1.

LifeSciences BC honours UBC professors
at BC Biotechnology Awards
Prof. Emeritus David Dolphin, the lead
creator behind QLT’s anti-blindness drug Visudyne, has been
named this year’s winner of LifeSciences BC’s Lifetime Achievement
award. Prof. Emeritus Allen Eaves and Prof.
Connie Eaves have received the Genome BC Award
for Scientific Excellence for their pioneering work in stem
cell research. Dr. Aubrey Tingle, president
and CEO of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research
shared the Leadership Award with Dr. Alan Winter,
president and CEO of Genome BC. Dr. Max Cynader,
director of the Brain Research Centre at Vancouver Coastal
Health and UBC, was named Researcher of the Year.
These awards are presented annually by LifeSciences BC
(formerly BC Biotech) to recognize individuals and organizations
that have made exceptional contributions to the biotech
sector in the province. The awards will be presented at
the annual BC Biotechnology Awards Ceremony on April 18.

3M award goes to UBC professors
English Senior Instructor Judy Brown and
Assoc. Prof. in Curriculum Studies Harry Hubball have been named 3M National Teaching Fellows. This
award honours up to 10 university faculty members each year
for their contribution to teaching and learning. UBC is
one of only two Canadian universities to have two professors
designated this year.
College for Interdisciplinary Studies
appoints a Principal
Prof. Grant Ingram has been appointed
Principal of the College for Interdisciplinary Studies for
a three-year term, effective April 1. Ingram is currently
Associate Dean Strategic Planning and Research, Faculty
of Science, and Professor of physical oceanography in the
Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences. He has served as
Dean pro tem in the Faculty of Science, and was
founding Principal of UBC’s St. John’s College.
Before coming to UBC, Ingram was Chair of the Institute
of Oceanography and Professor in the Department of Atmospheric
and Oceanic Sciences at McGill. He obtained his PhD in the
joint program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and his BSc and
MSc from McGill.

The CABSD recognises several categories of contributions
and improvements to the student experience and learning

Spring Biodiversity Lecture investigates
the future of plant survival
Dr. Peter Raven, Director of the Missouri
Botanical Garden, will present the Spring Biodiversity Lecture
at UBC on April 3. Raven is an advocate of research, conservation,
biodiversity and sustainability. He has received the 2001
National Medal of Science, the U.S.’s highest award for
scientific accomplishment.
The Biodiversity Lectures are put on by the Beaty Museum
of Natural History of the Biodiversity Research Centre at
UBC.

VP, External and Legal Affairs
moves to Great Northern Way
Prof. Dennis Pavlich will resign his administrative
appointment as VP, External and Legal Affairs effective
this spring in order to take on his new role as President
of UBC’s Great Northern Way Campus. He will also serve
as a Killam Award scholar in UBC’s Faculty of Law.
Prof. Stephen Toope praised Pavlich’s contribution
to the University over the past twelve years, serving as
associate vice president, university counsel and vice president,
working with the Chan Centre and the Learning Exchange.
