UBC photographer wins silver CCAE award

UBC staff member and photographer Martin Dee has been recognized
with a silver award for Best 2006 Photograph from the Canadian
Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) in its PRIX
D’EXCELLENCE annual awards program.

The photo of recent graduate and basketball star Pasha
Bains was used in UBC Reports and the 2005/ 06 UBC Annual
Report.

Award-winning professor to present
Larkin Lecture

University of Washington Prof. Ray Hilborn will be presenting the eighth Larkin Lecture entitled Learning
from fisheries successes: Managing fish is managing people.
The free public lecture will be held at 5 p.m. March 28,
2007 at UBC Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory, 2202
Main Mall.

Hilborn is the Richard C. and Lois M. Worthington Professor
of Fisheries Management in the School of Aquatic and Fishery
Sciences at the University of Washington.

Hilborn was also jointly awarded the 2006 Volvo Environment
Prize with UBC Fisheries Centre Professors Daniel
Pauly and Carl Walters.

The Larkin Lecture Fund was established in honour of retired UBC Prof. Peter Larkin who passed away
in 1996. The Lecture is held biennially at the UBC Fisheries
Centre and the manuscript is submitted for publication in
Fish and Fisheries.

Sustainability education forum

A one-day forum on March 31, 2007 at the Morris J. Wosk
Centre for Dialogue will explore the role of education in
achieving a sustainable British Columbia.

Entitled Why Sustainability Education? the forum
will feature interactive dialogues on learning and teaching
that leads to action with Charles Hopkins,
UN Chair for Education for Sustainable Development, York
University; Gerald Farthing, Deputy Minister,
Education, Citizenship and Youth, Manitoba; Moura
Quayle, BC Deputy Minister of Advanced Education;
and Alejandro Rojas and Yona Sipos from the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems.

BC event, focusing on the future of education in BC. Delegates

UBC student wins Millennium Excellence
Award

UBC international relations student Josephine Wong was
awarded a top-tier Millennium Excellence award from the
Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. She was also invited
to participate in the Foundation’s Think Again conference, providing award winners the opportunity to network
with other laureates and discuss social issues with experts
in a variety of fields.

Each year, the Foundation distributes more than 2000 Millennium
Entrance and In-Course Excellence Awards to students just
beginning their studies, or who have completed two years
of studies at post-secondary institutions. Candidates for
the Millennium Excellence Award are evaluated on their demonstration
of leadership, innovation, community involvement and academic

UBC Fine Arts Librarian explores
the world of archives and art

The link between archives and art will be discussed by
Vanessa Kam, Administrative Librarian at UBC Library’s
Fine Arts division, in a pair of upcoming talks.

Kam will examine the work and archives of contemporary
artists Felipe Ehrenberg and Lynn Hershman in her presentation, Artists’ Archives: Views from herein. The
talks are scheduled for March 29, from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.
as part of the Colloquium Series presented by the School
of Library, Archival and Information Studies. The April
3 event from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Lasserre Building is
presented by UBC Library and the Department of Art History,
Visual Art & Theory, marking the inaugural lecture of
the Diana Cooper Memorial Lecture Series.

UBC student wins journalism award

UBC student Kendyl R. Salcito was recently awarded the
David S. Barr award for her article, "War Brewing Over
Mineral Rights in Rural BC," a report on a controversial
government program that allows mineral staking on private
property.

Presented by the Newspaper Guild-CWA (Communications Workers
of America), the David S. Barr award recognizes college
and high school students for achievements in journalism,
with scholarship awards of $1,500 and $500, respectively.

The Newspaper Guild-CWA represents 35,000 journalists
and newspaper workers in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

New addition to President’s
Office

Patricia Stevens has accepted the position
of Director, Office of the President, effective April 2,
2007. Patricia will lead the President’s Office team
in providing administrative support for the President. Previously,
Stevens was Director, Office of the Vice President Administration
and Finance since 2003.

UBC professor wins chemical engineering
award

Chemical and Biological Engineering Prof. Emeritus
Paul Watkinson has won the 2007 R.S. Jane Memorial
Award, the premier award of the Canadian Society for Chemical
Engineering, in recognition of his significant contributions
to chemical engineering in Canada. An expert in high-temperature
reactors, Watkinson will present, as part of the award,
a lecture at the 57th Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference
in Edmonton in October.
