UBC mathematicians garner awards for research
achievements

The Canadian Mathematical Society has honoured three UBC
professors. Prof. Martin Barlow received
the 2008 Jeffery-Williams Prize for outstanding contributions
to mathematical research. Prof. Izabella Laba secured the 2008 Krieger-Nelson Prize for exceptional research
by a female mathematician, and Assoc. Prof. Vinayak
Vastal won the 2007 Coxeter-James Prize, honouring
young mathematicians.

UBC members receive community achievement
award

Assist. Prof. Margo Fryer, Prof. Kerry Jang and Elder Ellen White have been chosen to receive
a BC Community Achievement Award from the BC Achievement
Foundation, an independent foundation established by the
Province to honour B.C.’s spirit of excellence in
the arts, humanities and community service. The recipients
will be recognized at a Government House ceremony in Victoria
on April 25.

Through her work at UBC, Fryer helped establish the Learning
Exchange, a nationally recognized initiative which fosters
community service learning. Jang is a resident of Vancouver’s
Renfrew Collingwood community who uses his expertise as
professor and psychologist to address issues of homelessness,
addictions and mental health. White is a teacher, author,
activist, language specialist, storyteller, herbalist and
elder from the Snuneymuxw First Nation, and is on the Elders
Council of the Institute for Aboriginal Health at UBC and
BC Aboriginal Capacity and Developmental Research Environments.

award

Vice Provost Anna Kindler has been awarded the 2006 Lowenfeld Award by the National Art Education Association (NAEA) at the national convention in April last year.

Student’s thesis film screens at
MoMA

Creative Writing and Film Production MFA graduate Bojan
Bodruzic’s thesis film Immigrant will screen at
the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York this month
as part of Canadian Front 2007. The film follows two parallel
stories about Bosnian immigrants living in Canada in the
aftermath of the Bosnian war, exploring connections between
present and past, reality and memory. Canadian Front highlights
new and recent feature films from Canada.

UBC student-industry team net three
Canstruction awards

Called Attack Hunger, this rendition of a shark was built using 6,400 cans of foodA team of six UBC engineering students and 16 engineers
from Fluor Canada Ltd. won Best Rookie and People’s
Choice awards for their sculpture at the Vancouver
Canstruction competition to combat hunger last week at Canada
Place. Made from 6,400 cans of food and depicting a ship
headed for a shark’s open mouth, the seven-and-a-half-foot
sculpture also garnered Honourable Mention from the judges,
qualifying to proceed to the international judging round
in Texas in May.

Sustainability in action at UBC

Using only recycled materials, 11 teams of UBC students
will race to create practical solutions to real-world sustainability
issues during the 2007 Designs for a Sustainable World Challenge
on March 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The competition, including
musical entertainment and a barbecue, will take place in
front of the Student Union Building. The event is hosted
by UBC’s Engineers Without Borders in partnership
with the UBC Sustainability Office, the Terry Project and
the Applied Science Centre for Professional Skills Development.

Socrates is on trial at UBC

Socrates on Trial is a new production based on
Aristophanes’ comedy The Clouds and Plato’s Apology, adapted by UBC Prof. Andrew Irvine and directed by retired UBC lecturer Joan Bryans,
at the Chan Centre through to March 16. The play revolves
around two very different characters on trial claiming to
be the real Socrates.

International symposium on Chinese
painting and theory

UBC presents an international symposium March 29-30 at
St. John’s College on copying in Chinese art. Unlike
the traditions of post-Renaissance European art, which demanded
authenticity and originality, Chinese painting tradition
holds that a great artist is also a great copyist. This
event is an opportunity to rethink a theoretical position
for Chinese painting in the broader context of painting
theory.
