Campus Security encourages students, faculty
and staff to register on Propertycop
UBC Campus Security is working together with Propertycop
to encourage members of the Vancouver campus community to
utilize this service. Propertycop is an anti-theft community
policing program developed for individuals and corporations
to register valuable property online for the prevention
and recovery of stolen property. Registration is free and
uses a secure Internet site that can only be accessed by
police or authorized security organizations and Propertycop
volunteers.

National Wildlife Federation recognizes
UBC for conservation projects
UBC is one of nine colleges and universities awarded special
recognition for its conservation goals by the NWF. These
include creating a comprehensive sustainability strategy,
designing a green building rating system for residential
buildings, and completing an energy and water infrastructure
upgrade. This recognition is noted in the NWF 2006 edition
of the Campus Ecology Yearbook, featuring campuses
across North America enrolled in the NWF’s Campus
Ecology program.

Prof. earns Women of the Earth
award
Assoc. Prof. Amanda Vincent has been awarded
first prize in the Yves Rocher Foundation’s Women
of the Earth competition, honouring women who are committed
to improving and preserving nature. Vincent is recognised
for her work with Project Seahorse, an international marine
conservation group which she co-founded and directs. She
is the Canada Research Chair in Marine Conservation.
The Yves Rocher Foundation was created in 1991 by the Yves
Rocher cosmetic company under the auspices of the Institut
de France to promote eco-citizenship and support people
who raise environmental awareness and lead preservation
efforts.

Continuing Studies wins silver
and bronze
UBC Continuing Studies has won three medals at the University
Continuing Education Association Marketing (UCEA) awards.
These awards recognize the best marketing practices and
promotional pieces in Continuing Education in North America.
Silver medals were awarded for the Winter/Spring 2007 Course
Calendar and WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) Course
Poster. A bronze medal was won for the Languages, Cultures
and Travel Fall 2006/Winter 2007 brochure.
UBC IMANT names president
Philip Falls has been named the President
and Chief Executive Officer of UBC Investment Management
Trust Inc., the body responsible for UBC’s endowment
and staff pension funds. Falls is responsible for all investment
management programs in conjunction with IMANT’s Board of
Directors. Falls currently sits on the Board of the Association
of Canadian Pension Fund Management, the Investment Practices
Committee of the Pension and Investment Association of Canada,
and is a member of the Vancouver Society of Financial Analysts.
He received his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours and Birks
Medalist) from Concordia University and a Masters of Business
Administration (Finance) from the University of Western
Ontario.
Museum of Anthropology presents
Perception of Africa: A Dialogue
UBC’s Museum of Anthropology is hosting three evenings
of talks, discussion and reflection relating to Africa,
AIDS and its representations through Mar. 10. This is part
of the Museum’s Global Dialogue series and is presented
in conjunction with the exhibition The Village is Tilting:
Dancing AIDS in Malawi.

UBC brain researchers host public
forum on managing forgetfulness and aging successfully
Three brain researchers will speak on memory loss and how
it can be managed at a free public symposium Mar. 12 at
UBC’s Life Sciences Centre. Drs. Max Cynader, Howard Feldman and Jonathan Schooler of UBC’s Brain Research Centre join Dr.
Art Hister, host of Canada’s longest running
health radio show and emcee of the symposium, to discuss
disorders of the aging brain, strategies to help improve
memory, and how to age successfully. The symposium is sponsored
by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.
