Sloan Research Fellowships

Three UBC professors are recipients of the distinguished
Sloan Research Fellowship Award: Assistant Prof. of Physics
and Astronomy Dr. Andrea Damascelli; Assistant
Prof. of Chemistry Dr. Laurel Schafer,
and Assoc. Prof of Chemistry Dr. Ruth Signorell.
The Sloan Research Fellowships are intended to enhance the
careers of outstanding young science faculty members.

Faculty of Medicine award recipients

Dr. Niamh Kelly of Pathology & Laboratory
Medicine and Dr. Ian Scott of Family Practice
were each awarded a Canadian Association of Medical Education
Certificate of Merit in 2007.

Dr. Gordon Page of Educational Support
and Development and his team – including Drs.
Carol-Ann Courneya, Bill Godolphin, Simon Huang, Peter Wing, Angela Towle and Clive Grafton – were awarded the 2007 Association of Faculties of
Medicine of Canada AstraZeneca Award for Exemplary Contribution
to Faculty Development in Canada.

Dr. Harry Karlinsky of Psychiatry received
the 2007 Faculty of Medicine Award for Innovation in Continuing
Medical Education/Continuing Professional Development (CME/CPD).

Dr. Grant Innes of Surgery received the
2007 Faculty of Medicine Award for Distinguished Service
in CME/CPD recognizing substantial long term contributions
to CPD-CME.

Drs. Brian MacVicar of Psychiatry/Brain
Research Centre and Julio Montaner of Medicine were each
awarded a Killam Research Prize, Senior Science Category.

Dr. Lawrence McIntosh of Biochemistry &
Molecular Biology received a Killam Faculty Research Senior
Fellowship.

Awards

The UBC Alumni Association recognizes accomplished alumni
with awards presented at the annual Alumni Achievement Dinner.
The Alumni Association is asking for nominations from the

Pacific Museum of the Earth Vault and
Teacher’s Resource Centre

Officially opened Feb. 28, the Pacific Museum of the Earth
showcases Planet Earth from the core to the stratosphere.
Collections from the M.Y. Williams Geological Museum (UBC)
and the Pacific Mineral Museum (Vancouver) were combined
to form the PME within the Department of Earth and Ocean
Sciences through a partnership between UBC and the Pacific
Mineral Museum Society.

The PME is a free, public museum intended as a resource
for UBC, the general public and particularly K-12 education.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB)
Day

The UBC chapter of Engineers Without Borders is promoting
March 1 as EWB Day with events around the city to encourage
simple steps towards eliminating extreme poverty. Volunteers
will distribute mock newspapers dated 2025 detailing actions
taken to end poverty, focusing on the roles that Canadians
can play.

One action suggested is to buy fair trade coffee. A portion
of fair trade coffee sales from more than 20 participating
coffee shops in the Lower Mainland will be donated to EWB
to help fund programs in Africa.

Cultivating the Skill of Happiness

Matthieu Ricard, PhD in biochemistry,
Buddhist monk, author and researcher, will give four free
talks from March 9 – 11 on how changing thought processes
can help make people happier. This event is endorsed by
UBC’s College for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Institute
of Asian Research, the Department of Asian Studies, and
the Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation.

UBC brain researchers host public
forum on managing forgetfulness and aging successfully

Three brain researchers will speak on memory loss and how
it can be managed at a free public symposium March 12 at
UBC’s Life Sciences Centre. Drs. Max Cynader, Howard Feldman and Jonathan Schooler of UBC’s Brain Research Centre join Dr.
Art Hister, host of Canada’s longest running
health radio show and emcee of the symposium, to discuss
disorders of the aging brain, strategies to help improve
memory, and how to age successfully. The symposium is sponsored
by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.
