UBC professor named Canada’s Health Researcher
of the Year
Among Canada’s top health researchers recognized at the fifth
annual Canadian Health Research Awards, UBC’s Robert
Hancock was awarded the CIHR Michael Smith Prize in Health
Research – Canada’s Health Researcher of the Year.
Hancock is an undisputed leader in microbiology and his research
is having a tremendous impact on health. Throughout his career
he has focused on addressing infectious diseases, which are responsible
for a third of all deaths worldwide.
The CIHR Michael Smith Prize in Health Research: Canada’s Health
Researcher of the Year honours the memory of the late Dr. Michael
Smith who shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1993. This award
recognizes innovation, creativity, leadership and dedication to
health research, providing world-class researchers with funding
to pursue critical research and to support and mentor trainees.
Seasonal Concert 2006 – free for
faculty and staff
UBC staff and faculty are invited to attend this year’s
free Seasonal Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 from 11:45 a.m.-12:45
p.m. at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Performances
will include music by The Cascades Brass Quintet, a string
quartet made up of UBC School of Music students, and excerpts
from the UBC Opera Ensemble’s upcoming production of Gilbert
and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers.
Tickets are available at the Chan Centre ticket office, Monday-Friday
12- 5:00 p.m. and the day of the concert after 10:30 am. For more

UBC professor, President Elect
of Physicians for Social Responsibility
Recently named President Elect for Physicians for Social Responsibility
(PSR), Prof. Erica Frank is a Canada Research
Chair and Professor in the UBC Departments of Health Care and
Epidemiology and Family Practice, as well as a Senior Scholar
of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.
Founded in 1961, PSR is a non-profit advocacy organization that
is the medical and public health voice for policies to stop nuclear
war and reverse global warming and toxic degradation of the environment.
In 1985, PSR shared the Nobel Peace Price awarded to International
Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War for building public
awareness and pressure to end the nuclear arms race.
Inspirations & Aspirations: The UBC
Sustainability Strategy
Sustainability is a key component of Trek 2010 and
recent campus-wide consultations revealed how sustainability is
being integrated into planning processes at all university levels.
As a result, the following documents are now available:
- The Sustainability Strategy – defines the
university’s nine major goals and highlights specific initiatives
of departments across UBC to improve social, economic and ecological
performance. It covers composting, where to find fairly traded
products, and how we’ll meet Kyoto Protocol targets ahead of
schedule; - The Sustainability Strategy AND YOU – suggests
actions individuals can take towards a more sustainable campus
such as taking the Sustainability Pledge.
Both documents are available in print or can be viewed at www.sustain.ubc.ca.
The Sustainability Office is also available to provide presentations

Materials Engineers garner best paper
award
UBC Materials Engineering co-authors J.D. Zhu, B. Zhang, S.L. Cockcroft and D. Maijer have received the Best Paper Award
for their presentation at the Light Metals Symposium of the 2005
Canadian Conference of Metallurgists. The paper titled Simulation
of Microporosity Formation in A356 Aluminum Alloy Casting: The
Role of Hydrogen Transport, advances knowledge of the defects
in alloys used by the automotive and transportation industries
to build lighter, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
The award was presented at the 2006 conference by the national
Metallurgical Society, a constituent society of the Canadian Institute
of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
