UBC Health Symposium

The fourth annual UBC Health Symposium will take place on Nov.
29, 2006 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Life Sciences Institute.
Recently named one of BC’s Top 30 Employers, UBC is committed
to continuing to develop a healthy work environment.

The keynote and breakout sessions will include discussions about
how to create a healthy community at UBC, compassionate communication,
engaging the soul at work, and more.

Engineering students’ invention
ranks in TIME’s top 50

TIME Magazine has selected a car that travels 3,145
miles on a gallon of gas, invented by UBC engineering students,
as one of the top 50 inventions for 2006. Mechanical Engineering
students designed the carbon-fibre Mark V, which weighs 80 lbs,
has a curved underbody and an ultra-fuel-efficient 54 c.c. engine.
For optimal aerodynamics, the driver lies down and the windows
do not open.

Kevin Li and Jonathon Yeung led their team to first place in this year’s Society of
Automotive Engineers Supermileage Competition. More than 40 teams
from Canada, the U.S. and India competed to design, build and
drive a single-person vehicle in the most fuel-efficient way.

UBC professor wins major book prize

Prof. Stephen Ward has been awarded the 2005-06
Harold Adams Innis Prize for his book, The Invention of Journalism
Ethics (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2005). The
prize is annually awarded to the best English-language book in
the social sciences by the Aid to Scholarly Publications Program
and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Ward will receive his prize at a Nov. 25 ceremony on Parliament
Hill.

UBC professor wins BC Innovation Council
award

Prof. Luciana Duranti in the UBC School of Library,
Archival and Information Studies has been awarded the Frontiers
in Research Award from the BC Innovation Council. Recognized as
an international leader in archival studies, Duranti expanded
her initially small UBC-funded project into a global research
agenda in North America, Latin America, Europe, South Africa,
Australia and Asia. The founder and Project Director of the International
Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems,
Duranti leads a multinational, interdisciplinary research effort
addressing the long-term preservation of authentic electronic
records.

Institute of Asian Research launches
Summer Institute China Program

The UBC Institute of Asian Research recently
launched the Summer Institute China Program, an annual training
program for business executives and government officials preparing
for work in China. The Institute will take place June 3-15, 2007
in Vancouver, Whistler and Shanghai.

The program provides an opportunity to learn from government,
business and academic leaders in areas such as contract negotiations,
relationship management, government relations, cross-cultural
communication, crisis management, and human resources. The program
is partnering with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and
China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong during the Shanghai
portion of its program.

UBC Professors named Howard Hughes research
scholars

Three UBC faculty members have been designated Howard Hughes
Medical Institute (HHMI) international research scholars: Medical
Genetics Prof. Philip Hieter, Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology Prof. Natalie Strynadka, and
Neurology Prof. Yu Tian Wang. Worth more than
$500,000 over five years the trio were chosen from 546 applicants
from eight countries. Both Tian Wang and Strynadka are previous
HHMI research award recipients.

UBC alum receives Grand Cordon of the
Order of the Rising Sun

Pfizer Japan announced that Pfizer Inc. Chairman and Vancouver
native Henry McKinnell was decorated with the
Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun from his Imperial
Majesty Emperor Akihito. An UBC alum (BCom 1965), McKinnell is
one of the first non-Japanese citizens to receive the Order, the
most prestigious award available to members of the private sector.

McKinnell was recognized for his role as Chairman of the Business
Roundtable, a group committed to strengthening economic relationships
between Japan and the US. He has been a tireless advocate of foreign
investment in Japan and worked closely with the Japanese government’s
investment development authorities to improve Japan’s investment
climate. McKinnell has also contributed significantly to the improvement
of healthcare in Japan as a founding member of the STS Forum,
an international forum for science, technology and the future
of human health and wellness.

Prominent UBC alum passes away after
battle with cancer

Alum Gary Coull (BA 1976) was co-founder and
Head of the Asian international brokerage firm CLSA. Recognized
as a driving force in attracting international investors to Asia, FinanceAsia named Coull one of the top 50 people who
have had a significant influence on Asia’s financial landscape
in the past decade. Coull pushed CLSA to become the first foreign
investment firm to set up a joint venture investment bank in China
in 2003 after restrictions were eased following the country’s
entry into the World Trade Organization. His annual CLSA investment
Forum has been a dominant force in the investment community for
the past 13 years. A memorial service will be held in Hong Kong.
