UBC’s Bob Philip named International Athletic Director of the Year
UBC athletic director Bob Philip was one of 29 recipients of the GeneralSports TURF Systems Athletic Director of the Year Award when the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) handed out its annual honours June 21.
Philip, whose programs have produced 37 Canadian Interuniversity Sport and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics titles since he came to UBC in 1992, has been selected the winner in the international division and received his award during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon at NACDA’s 41st Annual Convention.
“More than anything, this award speaks to the dedication of our student-athletes and our coaching staff, and to the tremendous support we receive from the university and greater community,” said Philip. “I’m extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and I hope we can continue to raise the bar for excellence in university athletics.”
Thunderbird teams claimed national titles in men’s and women’s swimming, women’s basketball and men’s soccer in 2005-06, and won silver medals in women’s volleyball, women’s field hockey and women’s golf. In addition, the men’s rowing team brought home its first Canadian University Rowing Championship, while women’s golf topped the field at the RCGA Canadian University/College Championships for the fourth straight year.

UBC Chef Takes Gold at International Culinary Challenge
UBC Food Services Executive Chef Piyush Sahay led a four-person team representing Canadian universities to the gold medal at the American Culinary Federation’s 12th Annual Tastes of the World Culinary Challenge in June at the University of Massachusetts.
The culinary quartet of Sahay, Thomas Lashbrook of McMaster University and Carrie Schnurr and Kurt Leumann of University of Western Ontario bested their 13 American rivals at the conference of more than 240 university chefs.
Guided by the conference theme of "regional, healthy, and flavour," teams prepared four-course menu using ingredients from a mystery basket that included fresh artichokes, eggplant, capers, apples, strawberries, chicken and red snapper. The teams had 3 hours to plan, prepare and execute 12 plates and one buffet item presentation.
Team Canada’s winning creations included "nori" wrapped pan-seared snapper with basil and yogurt sauce, "paneer" stuffed chicken breasts with roasted yellow pepper coulis, purple potatoes and seasonal vegetables, and an apple and fig "tatin" with lace croustilles, rose-infused cream and fresh fruit.

National Conference Honours UBC Coaching and Careers Programs
Two UBC programs were recognized at the annual Canadian Association of Universities Business Officers (CAUBO) conference held June 17-20 in Montreal, Quebec.
UBC Human Resources’ Coaching Program and UBC Career Services’ CareersOnline both received CAUBO Quality and Productivity awards for improving the quality and reducing the cost of higher education programs and services.
Associate Vice President Human Resources Lisa Castle and staff Julie Stockton and Erna Hagge made the trip to Montreal to accept the Coaching Program’s third-place award, while Una Walsh, Associate Director of Career Services, was present to accept CareersOnline’s honourable mention award.
