North American architects recognize UBC professor
UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Asst. Prof. Oliver Lang has won the 2005 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Faculty Design Award.
The Faculty Design Award is the ACSA’s most competitive award. Lang was one of four recipients this year, out of 60 submissions. He will receive his award at the 2006 ACSA Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Mar. 30 – Apr. 2, 2006.
The ACSA Faculty Design award was created to recognize and encourage outstanding work in architecture and related environmental design and to provide a venue for work that advances the reflective nature of practice and teaching.
B.C. engineers honour Irving K. Barber Learning Centre
Earth Tech Canada, the engineering firm that designed the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre’s mechanical systems, has been recognized with an award of merit by the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia (CEBC).
To meet UBC’s sustainability objectives, Earth Tech designed the building’s heating and ventilation systems using thermoactive floor slabs that store and redirect heat and cooling energy. As a result, the centre will benefit from reduced mechanical equipment costs, and operational energy costs up to 60 per cent lower than conventional air-conditioning systems.
UBC psychiatrist cited for help to homeless
Assoc. Prof. Kerry Jang from the Dept. of Psychiatry has been awarded the Academic of the Year Award from the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of B.C. (CUFA/BC) for his outstanding research program to assist Vancouver’s homeless. This award is given to B.C. university faculty to recognize their significant contributions to the wider community through their scholarly work.
