Event: UBC students celebrate international learning through film, food, dance, drama and a career fairs at International Week 2006 – AkSents

Academy Award-winning director Ross Kauffman, who directed and produced the acclaimed 2004 film Born Into Brothels, is but one of the highlights during International Week at UBC.
At noon on March 21, Kauffman will screen and discuss his humourous and touching portrayal of the resiliency of several unforgettable children living in Calcutta’s red light district.
“This is a student-led event that focuses on the theme of AkSents — the different ways that words are spoken and written,” says Enzula Tavormina, Community Programming, UBC International House. “It’s a great opportunity for people to communicate across cultures and express their own distinct voice.”
- Students are holding a pancake breakfast to raise money for AIDS orphans and widows in Zambia. A career fair and seminar will give students insights on cross-cultural job hunting skills and what’s needed to work abroad. Dance lessons to African-Cuban, Polynesian and Flameno music will take place on Thursday, March 23. Capeoira, Korean fan dancing, bhangra and gumboot dancing will be on display on Friday, March 24.
- The week-long event also features social advocate Marc Kielburger, executive director of Free the Children, the largest network in the world of children helping children through education.
- Award-winning filmmaker Velcrow Ripper will screen Scared Sacred, which documents the planet’s “Ground Zeros.” Ripper visits Bosnia, post 9/11 New York and war-torn Afghanistan among other sites and asks if it’s possible to find hope in the darkest moments of human history.
