New Acting Dean for Faculty of Land and Food Systems

Dr. Murray Isman, professor of Entomology / Toxicology, will take on the position of Dean of Land and Food Systems pro tem .

Isman teaches courses in entomology, environmental toxicology and integrated pest management, and has served as the President of the International Society of Chemical Ecology, the Phytochemical Society of North America, and the Entomological Society of British Columbia (twice).

UBC Receives $500,000 for Fine Arts Students

The Roloff Beny Foundation has donated $500,000 to establish a permanent endowment fund to recognize and support photo-based art created by students in UBC’s Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory.

The gift will not only provide scholarships, but will also fund the purchase and/or repair of photography-related equipment and supplies required by visual arts students.

Roloff Beny, who died in 1984, was a Canadian photographer, painter and designer who won numerous awards, among them the Gold Medal of the Leipzig International Book Fair, the Charles Blanc Medallion of the French Academy, and the Order of Canada.

International Internships Available for UBC Grads

Seven young Canadians will get the opportunity to work overseas in fields related to their university studies as Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) interns.

Funded by Canadian International Development Agency, UBC’s IRES will send interns to Africa and South America this fall to work on projects ranging from finance to water quality testing to urban educational programs.

Dean Honoured for Lifetime Achievements

Dr. Dorothy Shaw, Associate Dean, Equity, of the UBC Faculty of Medicine has been awarded the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists’ (SOGC) President’s Award.

The President’s Award recognizes an individual’s contributions to the Society’s programs and to the betterment of women’s health in Canada and abroad.

Dr. Shaw was recognized for her leadership in women’s health issues, particularly in the promotion of reproductive health.
