The International Space University 2005 Summer Session Program
Vancouver, BC, Canada, June 22 to August 24, 2005
Vancouver — An unprecedented number of astronauts, including NASA’s Jeffrey Hoffman and Russia’s Valery Korzun, are coming to the University of British Columbia this summer in a series of rare public panel discussions presented by the International Space University (ISU) 2005 Summer Session Program.
A robot competition, a model rocket launch and public events on topics ranging from space and national security to space tourism will be part of the Summer Session Program, from June 22 to August 24. (See below for highlights)
“I am delighted to welcome this extremely high calibre group of experts and researchers to UBC and Vancouver,” says UBC President Martha Piper. “The educational opportunities that ISU offers all British Columbians through its public events will greatly enhance our understanding of space science.”
UBC won the bid to host the nine-week program in 2003. The bid was led by UBC mechanical engineering professor Doug Romilly, who is co-chair of the local organizing committee.
Based in Strasbourg, France, the ISU is the hub of academic research and professional development in the international space industry. Its annual summer session program is held in a different country each year and attracts hundreds of post-graduate students and professionals as well as industry pioneers and luminaries as lecturers.
“Our Canadian and worldwide sponsors have made it possible to hold the Summer Session at UBC, which contributes with excellent academic resources and facilities. We are very grateful of the tremendous support UBC has extended to us,” says ISU President Michael Simpson, who will be joined by Canada’s first astronaut Marc Garneau at the June 23 opening ceremony, followed by a public panel discussion on the state of Canada’s space industry on June 24.
