UBC Okanagan Encourages Students With 75 Per Cent Average to Apply

KELOWNA — UBC Okanagan is kicking its first student recruitment
campaign into high gear before the Feb. 28 application deadline
by inviting secondary students with a 75 per cent Grade 12
average to apply. And, students with final high school grades
averaging 86 per cent or higher are guaranteed an entrance
scholarship.

Set to open its doors to the inaugural first-year class in
September, UBC Okanagan has launched an advertising campaign
throughout British Columbia and Alberta to build awareness
among high school students about new opportunities for earning
a UBC degree via its new campus and programs in Kelowna.

“Our fundamental mandate,” says Deborah Robinson,
Associate Registrar and Director, Enrolment Services, “is
to increase access for students to the academic and research
quality that UBC is famous for. Now we need to reach students
who may not yet be aware of this new post-secondary option
available next year.”

With a decision from the provincial government in March 2004
to transform the Okanagan University College North Kelowna
campus into UBC Okanagan, officials from both institutions
have been working to provide 3,900 university spaces by September
— an increase of 900 from those available for university
programs at OUC this year. By 2010, there will be 7,500 students
at UBC Okanagan, including graduate students.

Following extensive academic and community consultation,
UBC announced program and research directions in fall 2004.
On Oct. 22 the university announced the establishment of the
Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences at UBC Okanagan,
with its vision to provide a high-quality learning environment
in small campus community setting.

Prospective undergraduate students can apply to study agroecology,
arts, education, engineering, fine arts, management, nursing,
pre-pharmacy, science and social work.
