Media are invited to attend a presentation of the UBC Human
Security Conference Report, the first report on foreign policy
presented to the Martin government by Western Canadian students.

The report, commissioned by the Government of Canada, is
the final product of a four-day conference taking place at
UBC March 11-14, 2004.

Attending the conference are more than 100 graduate, undergraduate
and secondary students from across Western Canada tasked with
formulating foreign policy recommendations related to Canada’s
commitments in Afghanistan, the HIV / AIDS epidemic in South
Africa, and Canada’s role in peacekeeping initiatives worldwide.

The presentation will include keynote speeches from retired
Major-General Guy Tousignant, the former force commander for
the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda and the former
secretary-general of Care International, and Major-General
Andrew Leslie who has just returned from a tour as commander
of the Task Force in Kabul and deputy commander of the International
Security Assistance Force.

The conference is funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs
and International Trade and is being organized in collaboration
with UBC’s International Relations Students’ Association and
the Centre for International Relations at UBC. The Canadian
Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute (CDFAI) has contributed
funding for the publication and distribution of the final
report across Canada.
