Teens’ and Women’s Substance Use Treatment Explored at UBC Conference

How do we protect children from alcohol advertising that
is specially developed to target young people?

This topic will be discussed at a public lecture on Sept.
24 at 7 p.m. that is sponsored by the University of British
Columbia’s Interprofessional Continuing Education program
in co-operation with the Aurora Centre at B.C. Women’s Hospital
and Health Centre.

A 45-minute video called Spin the Bottle: Sex, Alcohol and
Advertising will be presented by Jean Kilbourne, an international
specialist on how alcohol and tobacco advertising affects
youth. The presentation focuses on techniques that alcohol
marketers use to link their products to young people’s self-image.
Kilbourne will offer concrete strategies for youth to counter
alcohol advertising messages and will answer audience questions.

There is a $10 charge to attend the lecture. Attendees can
pre-register online, by phone or fax or pay at the door.

The lecture is part of national conference called Women’s
Substance Use Treatment: Celebrating and Moving Forward to
be held Sept. 25 and 26 at the Coast Plaza Hotel and Suites
in Vancouver.

professor, UBC Dept. of Family Practice, who will discuss
addiction-related illnesses experienced by women in prison.
