UBC marks 9/11 anniversary

On Thursday, September 11, members of the UBC community remembered
the tragic events of two years ago through music, readings, photos
and a public "Dialogue on the World after September 11."

Music provided by the Infinitis String Quartet, interspersed with
readings by students, provided a calm noon-hour setting for reflection
at the Royal Bank Cinema Chan Centre. At 4 p.m. an audience at UBC’s
Robson Square theatre heard a video-conference address from Colonel
Bill Smullen, former chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of State Colin
Powell, followed by discussion. At 7 p.m. the photographic exhibition
"After September 11: Images from Ground Zero" opened for
viewing at Robson Square, showing the work of photographer Joel
Meyerowitz.

UBC joined with Simon Fraser University and the U.S. Consulate
General to organize activities.

UBC physics students score high at the 2003 undergraduate
examination

UBC undergrad physics students scored three of the top four spots
in the 2003 Undergraduate Examination run by the Canadian Association
of Physicists (CAP). UBC traditionally places well in this national
contest, but this year’s CAP results were exceptional, says Prof.
Brian Turrell, acting head of UBC’s Physics and Astronomy Department.

Max Metlitski, fourth year Honors, placed first, Daragh Rooney,
fourth year Majors, placed third, and Guillaume Chabot-Couture,
an exchange student from Laval University who was also a Canada
team member for the International Physics Olympiad in 2000, took
fourth place.

UBC student earns CBIE grant to study in Mexico

Lauren Graham has been awarded an International Learning Grant
by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). The award
will help her finance her study in Mexico as part of a student exchange
program.

With applications from across Canada, the selection process was
extremely competitive. Students had to demonstrate their commitment
to international learning through scholastic achievement, volunteer
work and leadership activities.

CBIE seeks to provide opportunities for Canadian learners to develop
a global mindset. It established the International Learning Grants
in 2000 to respond to the great interest in studying abroad.
