UBC United Way Campaign Fires up the Barbie

UBC Reports | Vol. 49 | No. 9 | Sep.
4, 2003

This year’s goal: $500,000

The 2003 UBC United Way Campaign kicks off with a BBQ Sept.
24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Student Union Plaza.

BBQ fare is a burger and pop for $5, with proceeds going
to the United Way of the Lower Mainland, an umbrella body
that funds many social services organizations.

Even before the kickoff, UBC students Monty Raisinghani and
Sunny Aujla organized Kickstart 2003, a 10 km run around the
campus on Aug. 17. Close to 150 people registered and the
event raised $2,500 for United Way.

Last year’s campaign raised more than $460,000 on campus.
“We hope to reach $500,000 this year and with the generosity
of the campus community, we are confident we can do it,”
says Eilis Courtney, who co-chairs the campaign this year
with Deborah Austin, last year’s campaign chair.

“We are always looking for volunteers,” says Austin.
“This is a great opportunity for staff, faculty and students
to build their leadership, public speaking and event planning
skills.”
