Environment Minister David Anderson will be one of several
panelists discussing "Taking Action on Climate Change."

Organized by UBC, the free public event takes place on Friday,
January 10 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in Room 150 of the UBC Chemistry
Bldg.

"The panel discussion will focus on the sustainable
development opportunities that dealing with climate change
presents for Canada," says panelist John Robinson, a
professor at UBC’s Sustainable Development Research Initiative.

"The current flurry of media attention on the Kyoto
Accord has focused almost entirely on the question of the
expected costs of meeting the Kyoto target for Canada. In
doing so it has ignored a key message of recent research and
activity in the climate change arena. This message has to
do with the degree to which investing in energy efficiency
and renewable energy will itself stimulate both technological
and institutional innovation, many of which offer remarkable
business opportunities."

Other panelists include: Peter Busby, principal of Busby
and Associates Architects, and Bruce Sampson, senior vice-president,
Strategic Planning and Sustainability at B.C. Hydro

The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Hadi Dowlatabadi,
a Canada Research Chair in Global Change at UBC’s Sustainable
Development Research Institute. Stephen Owen, Secretary of
State for Western Economic Diversification and Indian Affairs
and Northern Development Canada will make the opening remarks.
