UBC experts examine Romanow report

The shape of Canada’s future health-care system will be revealed
when the Romanow Commission on the Future of Health Care in
Canada tables its report on Thurs. Nov. 28.

Following is a list of UBC experts ready to comment on key

Health-care economics

Steve Morgan

A health-care economist who can discuss the public/private
health care debate and is an expert in universal pharmacare.
What is the economic burden of universal health care? Morgan
is a post-doctoral fellow in UBC’s Centre for Health Services
and Policy Research.

Arminee Kazanjian

A professor of Health Care and Epidemiology, Kazanjian presented
material to the Commission. An expert in the number of nurses
and doctors Canada needs, Kazanjian can also discuss health-care
technologies – are they really the answer to our health care
needs and if so, who should pay for these hi-tech treatments?

Morris Barer

A professor of Health Care and Epidemiology, Barer can talk
about doctor supply, access to care, wait lists, the effects
of an aging population, and health care financing.

Educating health-care professionals

John Cairns

UBC’s dean of Medicine, Cairns can discuss B.C.’s plan to
produce enough medical professionals to meet the demand through
a new expanded program that will double the number of graduates
by 2005.

Sally Thorne

The director of UBC’s School of Nursing, Thorne can discuss
nursing shortages that affect not only the practice of nursing
but Canada’s ability to train new nurses. How are we going
to educate all the nurses we need when thousands of ‘baby
boomer’ nurses retire.

John Gilbert

The principal of UBC’s College of Health Disciplines, Gilbert
can discuss what the health-care professional of the future
will need to know. He is an expert in the area of health-care
education and the need to train health sciences students to
work interprofessionally to make care more effective and safer.

Drug costs

James Wright

A professor in the departments of Pharmacology and Therapeutics
and Medicine, Wright is an expert in the costs of drugs. He
can talk about cost-effective drugs, doctors’ prescribing
patterns and how Canada can reduce costs associated with Pharmacare.

Barbara Mintzes

An expert in pharmaceuticals advertising, Mintzes can discuss
the effects of direct-to-consumer marketing and how this affects
drug sales and the costs of providing pharmaceuticals. She
is a researcher in the Centre for Health Studies and Policy

Graham Riches

Director of UBC’s School of Social Work, Riches is an expert
on social policy, the history of the welfare state and social
policy development in Canada and the impact of social policy
decisions.

Allan Tupper

A professor of Political Science and UBC vice-president of
Government Relations, Tupper is an expert on public policy
