UBC, teaching hospitals gain $14 million in federal funds for indirect costs of research

Investigators at the University of British Columbia and its affiliated
teaching hospitals have received $14 million in federal funding
to support the indirect costs associated with federally sponsored
research, according to an announcement made today at UBC by Stephen
Owen, Secretary of State for Western Economic Development.

"We are delighted that the federal government’s long-standing
support for research includes the recognition of these significant
costs," says UBC President Martha Piper. "This funding
will help to strengthen our current research environment and we
look forward to contributing to the enhancement of Canada’s
research capacity."

The support, part of a one-time $200 million payment made to Canadian
universities and research hospitals, is designed to help defray
indirect costs that stem from research such as operation and maintenance
expenses, library and research archiving expenses and technology
and commercialization services.

First announced in the December 2001 federal budget, the investment
is designed to help universities and research-based hospitals strengthen
their research programs and attract and retain top investigators.

The distribution of funds to individual universities is based on
their past federal research awards from the granting agencies —
the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada,
the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

UBC and its affiliated teaching hospitals attracted more than $200
million in research funding in 2000/2001.
