Board chair welcomes new appointees

University of British Columbia Board of Governors chair Larry
Bell welcomed six new appointees to the university board today.

Nicole Byres, a lawyer, Bryce Rositch, an architect, Karen
Nishi, an advertising executive, Martin Glynn, president and
CEO of HSBC Bank Canada, John Reid, president and CEO of BC
Gas Inc. and Jay Grewal, acting president of Aimglobal Technologies
Inc. have all been appointed by the provincial government
for a three-year term.

"Our board looks forward to working with all the new
appointees," Bell said. "These are exciting and
challenging times at UBC and I know each new board member
will be able to further our common Trek 2000 goal of
making UBC the top university in Canada."

Bell also thanked five departing board members for their
service: Elsie McMurphy, former executive director of the
BC Teachers Federation, Stephen Howard, the director of communications
and research for the Hospital Employees’ Union, Guninder
C. Mumick, a program manager with the Vancouver/Richmond Health
Board, Joe Y.Wai, an architect and Linda C. Crompton, the
former CEO of Citizens Bank.

"We appreciate the rich perspective and backgrounds
these members brought to our board and are grateful for their
contributions," Bell said.

UBC’s 15-member Board of Governors comprises the chancellor
(William Sauder), the president (Martha Piper), eight persons
appointed by the provincial government (Bell, Linda Thorstad
and the six new appointees), two faculty members elected by
faculty (English Prof. Dennis Danielson and Civil Engineering
Prof. Gregory Lawrence), two full-time students elected by
students (Maryann Adamec and Tieg Martin) and one person elected
by and from the full-time employees of the university who
are not faculty members (Ben Pong).

By legislation, the board is responsible for the management,
administration and control of the property, revenue, business
and affairs of the university, including the appointment of
senior officials and faculty on the recommendation of the
president.
