They are searching for plants that will thrive in the water
shortage predicted in the Lower Mainland this summer. They
don’t want to be counted among the majority of people who
now recognize thousands of corporate labels but can’t identify
10 plants.

Wanting to boost biodiversity, recreate original micro-environments,
show some unique local plants to visitors, or join other smart
gardeners in the hot new wave in North American gardening,
they are coming to the third annual Pacific Northwest Native
Plant Sale at the UBC Botanical Garden, (6804 Southwest Marine
Dr.) on April 8 from11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The major appeal is the unprecedented variety, quality
and price of hundreds of species of native plants,” says Liz
Howard, Friend of the Garden (FOG) and chair of the event
which is designed to raise awareness as well as funds for
the garden.

“FOGs and our co-sponsors The Native Plant Society of B.C.
are delighted and encouraged to see people, especially parents
and children, studying the labels and demonstrations, talking
to growers from all over B.C. and taking advantage of free
admission to the Botanical Garden and tours,” she adds.

Organizer Ross Waddell of the B.C. Native Plant Society
has some suggestions for those searching for plants that do
well in dry conditions.

“Flowering currant, Oregon grape, fawn lilies and shooting
stars are just some of the plants people will find at the
Pacific Northwest Native Plant Sale,” he says. “There will
also be experts on hand to answer questions.”

Food and refreshment is available along with pay
parking across from the UBC Botanical Garden. Call 604.822.3928
