As part of the kick off for the annual winter meeting of the Canadian
Mathematical Society (CMS) Dec. 9-12 in Vancouver, Yale University
Prof. Roger Howe will give the Vancouver Institute public lecture
on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 8:15 p.m.
In his talk, Prof. Howe will present some of the factors that
contribute to Chinese elementary students’ strong performance in
mathematics and what North American educators and parents can learn
from the Chinese system.
UBC’s Dept. of Mathematics is hosting the CMS meeting and invites
parents and educators to attend the public lecture as well as the
CMS education program on Sunday, Dec. 10 starting at 10:30 a.m.
The Sunday program will include the morning plenary session by
Prof. Howe and afternoon presentations and a panel discussion comparing
the teaching of mathematics in elementary schools in North America
and China which starts at 2 p.m.
