As the world adjusts to globalization, UBC’s Centre for Research
in Women’s Studies and Gender Relations is hosting a major conference
to discuss its implications for the lives of Asian women.

“Women’s Studies: Asian Connections,” which is co-sponsored by
UBC’s Institute of Asian Research and UBC’s and SFU’s Women’s Studies
programs, has attracted diverse participants from more than 30 countries.
It will take place Nov. 2 through Nov. 5 at UBC’s Asian Centre.

“As globalization policies become more prevalent, Asian women
are suffering in sweatshops, in agriculture and other areas. Many
are being forced to emigrate and others are victims of the trafficking
in women,” says Prof. Valerie Raoul, director of the Centre for
Research in Women’s Studies and Gender Relations. “They are also
in the forefront of resisting these policies and creating new models.”

In symposiums and forums, topics such as health, the arts and
culture, diasporic women, gender, ethnicity, education, poverty
and policy and development will be discussed.

Fees vary, but the conference is free for UBC and SFU students.
