UBC community celebrates innovators at campus annual general meeting

University of British Columbia innovators whose achievements range
from the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Olympic competition will be celebrated
at the university’s third campus annual general meeting to be held
Thursday, Oct. 26 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Chan Centre for the
Performing Arts.

UBC President Martha Piper and Vice-President, Administration
and Finance, Terry Sumner will report on the university’s financial
position and progress made in implementing Trek 2000, UBC’s
vision document.

Highlights include record federal research funding, new initiatives
such as the Master of Software Systems program and the B.C. Wine
Research Centre.

Presentations including video segments will celebrate the innovations
of the late Michael Smith, Nobel laureate, and other UBC innovators.

The 24 student athletes, staff and faculty who participated in
the recent 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney will also be recognized.

Members of UBC’s senior administration will be present at the
meeting along with: Linda Thorstad, vice-chair, External, UBC Board
of Governors; Alma Mater Society President Maryann Adamec; and Prof.
Doug Kilburn, former director of UBC’s Biotechnology Laboratory.
