UBC’s Faculty of Education is presenting a public forum, Wednesday,
Oct. 27, to discuss one of the most contentious education issues
in B.C. — the role of traditional schools. Important new information
and research findings will be presented, school trustees will participate
and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

“Traditional schools have been very controversial with the B.C.
Teachers’ Federation, the general public and school boards around
the province,” says Nancy Sheehan, dean of Education. “This forum
will shed some light on the controversies. “

“There many misunderstandings and unanswered and questions, such
as, what are traditional schools really intended to do, how do they
accomplish their missions, and what kind of education do they provide,”
adds Dan Brown, professor of educational administration in UBC’s
Educational Studies Dept.

“Fortunately, four traditional schools in the province permitted
the members of a UBC research team to speak with their teachers
and parents, observe their classrooms and events, and examine their
documentation,” says Brown, who led the university team and will
address the forum.

Respondents at the forum are Kathy Wagner, school trustee and parent,
Maple Ridge, and Mary Polak, school trustee and parent, Surrey.
Admission is free and a reception will follow.
