Two innovative new programs — Arts Co-op and the Foundations Program
— will be officially launched at UBC Sept. 20 by UBC President
Martha Piper and Dean of Arts pro tem Alan Tully.

The programs represent radical change in the Faculty of Arts and
will revolutionize Arts education at the university.

Arts Co-op provides the first opportunity for students in all 15
Arts departments — ranging from Economics to French, Music and
Psychology — to combine relevant, paid work experience with academic
studies.

UBC co-op programs have tripled in size in the past six years and
91 per cent of the university’s co-op students have job offers when
they graduate.

The Foundations Program gives first-year students a comprehensive
introduction to the social sciences and humanities based on a radically
different curriculum and approach to teaching.

Half the student contact hours will be in small tutorial groups
and each course will be designed and team-taught by three faculty
members from different departments, chosen for their scholarly reputation
and strength in teaching. The program will accept students for September
2000.
