Helping family and friends cope with schizophrenia and mood disorders
is the theme of a free public forum to be held Oct. 31 in the Hotel
Vancouver. The forum is co-sponsored by the University of British
Columbia’s Psychiatry Dept.

A morning panel presentation will feature Psychiatry Prof. Peter
Liddle, head of UBC’s Schizophrenia Division, who will discuss the
treatment of schizophrenia.

Other panelists include Vancouver psychiatrist Dr. Sean Flynn who
will present Navigating the Health Care System: A Guide for Families
and Consumers.

Patients of psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Long will join him to discuss
their personal experiences with schizophrenia.

In the afternoon, Dr. Raymond Lam, medical director of the Mood
Disorders Clinic at UBC Hospital, will outline the new medications
now available to treat depression and bipolar disorder. Personal
and family attitudes about medications can influence their effectiveness
says Lam, who is one of a five-member panel of speakers.

Panelist Dr. Roy Mackenzie, a UBC professor of Psychiatry, will
discuss the effect of mood disorders on relationships. He will also
describe psychotherapy treatments designed to help individuals re-establish
and improve their personal relationships as they recover from depression.

Other panel members include the president of the Mood Disorders
Association of B.C. and mood disorder patients and family members.

Panelists will answer questions from the audience.

The forum marks the final day of a three-day conference for practitioners
dealing with schizophrenia and mood disorders called Clinical Medical
Excellence ’98.
