Diversity, Writing and Social Critique is the theme of a day-long
conference to be held April 25 at the University of British Columbia.

Hosted by the Dept. of English, the conference features keynote
addresses by three Canadian authors — all graduates of UBC — who
bring unique perspectives to issues of diversity in Canadian society
and literature.

The keynotes speakers are:

  • Irshad Manji, author of Risking Utopia: On the Edge of a
    New Democracy
    , and producer and host of the Vision TV program
    In the Public Interest;
  • Roy Miki, a professor of English at Simon Fraser University
    and editor of Westcoast Line, a journal of contemporary
    writing and criticism;
  • Fred Wah, a professor of English at the University of Calgary
    and winner of the Governor General’s Award for his book of poetry,
    Waiting for Saskatchewan.

The conference also features a series of papers presented by faculty
members and graduate students from UBC, Malapsina University-College
and the universities of Hong Kong and Alberta. They will discuss
the work of authors such as Wayson Choy, SKY Lee and Evelyn Lau
and look at issues of cultural diversity and identity politics in
Canadian society. For more information, call 604.822.4469, fax 604.822.6906
