No cavities — good news in any language

Children of Vietnamese families were the subjects of Vancouver’s
first culturally specific oral health promotion project, recently
completed by UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry. Many Vietnamese toddlers
suffer from nursing decay, a severe form of tooth decay linked to
inappropriate infant feeding and comforting habits. Project leader
Dr. Rosamund Harrison found that education and counselling in the
mother’s native language had a significant effect on toddlers’ dental
health.

Green College passes test with flying colours

Green College, founded four years ago as an experiment in graduate
student learning, has exceeded both its social and academic objectives
an independent review team has found. The college is home to 100
residents, including graduate students, post doctoral fellows and
visiting scholars, and hosts more than 200 events each year. As
well, non-residential members include 40 UBC faculty members. The
college aims to create a community focused on interdisciplinary
study, in which students and faculty with different interests can
interact socially as well as intellectually.
