The opening ceremony for St. John’s College at the University of
British Columbia will be an emotional moment for graduates of the
original St. John’s University in Shanghai, one of the most prestigious
and influential universities in China before it was closed 44 years
ago.

The college fulfils the long-cherished dream of St. John’s alumni
to see the spirit of Light and Truth — their alma mater’s motto
— passed along to a new generation of Johanneans. This September
the college will admit 33 resident graduate students from China,
other parts of Asia, the West and around the world.

The college will house an international community of 178 students
by September 1999, and will help build links between different parts
of the world by hosting workshops, think tanks, seminars and conferences
focusing on international issues.
