Outdoor air pollution kills more than 5 million people a year

Yahoo featured research by Michael Brauer, a professor at UBC’s school of population and public health.

The study, which was presented at the 2016 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, found that as many as 5.5 million people die each year due to outdoor air pollution.

“Air pollution is the fourth highest risk factor for death globally and by far the leading environmental risk factor for disease,” Brauer said. “Reducing air pollution is an incredibly efficient way to improve the health of a population.”
