Department of Family Practice professors receive recognition

Garey Mazowita, a clinical professor in the Department of Family Practice, has been elected the next president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Mazowita became a member of the CFPC’s National Executive Committee in 2012 as honorary secretary-treasurer and president-elect in 2013. Click here for more.

Parmjit Sohal who completed his family medicine residency at UBC and is now a clinical associate professor in the Department of Family Practice, has been named the 2014 Family Physician of the Year in British Columbia by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Click here for more.

Engineering prof receives Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring

Electrical and computer engineering professor Purang Abolmaesumi was given the Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring. Abolmaesumi’s mentoring approach and the collaborative culture of his labs have inspired his students beyond their time at university. Click here for more.

Nursing professor emeritus celebrates a century

Verna Huffman Splane, School of Nursing honorary professor and one of Canada’s leaders in nursing and international health, turns 100 on November 23, 2014. From 1973 to 1981, Splane was the inaugural principal nursing officer in the Canadian Department of National Health and Welfare (the precursor of Health Canada), the highest office for a nurse in the country. She went on to become a pioneer in nursing through her work with the World Health Organization and the International Council of Nurses. Click here for more.

Master of Occupational Therapy class earns top spot in 2014 gOT Spirit Challenge

The Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) class earned first place in this year’s gOT Spirit Challenge, a nation-wide competition to raise awareness of occupational therapy as part of Occupational Therapy Month in October. Dressed as television reporters and presenters, the MOT team created a mock newscast video documenting what people really know about occupational therapy. Click here for more.

Staff Pension Plan Election

The Staff Pension Plan (SPP) Election for two pension board directors is now underway. Election packages were mailed to plan members on October 31, 2014. Follow this link for candidate information and to vote online. Voting closes at 4 p.m. on November 26, 2014. The results of the election will be posted on the SPP website on December 3, 2014. Global Connectivity E-Mentorship Program launch: Conversation on Difference Making

Students, faculty and staff are invited to an event that celebrates the launch of the Global Connectivity E-Mentorship Program, a student initiative that focuses on the empowerment and development of women and youth in India through mentorship and training with UBC students. The program connects the Sauder School of Business and the Faculty of Applied Science with the Vidya Integrated Development for Youth and Adults in India, a holistic education program empowering the underprivileged, and the Mahindra Foundation, which provides supports medical treatment and disaster relief. Vidya’s founder Rashmi Misra and UBC president Arvind Gupta will speak at the event.

School of Community and Regional Planning Lunchtime Dialogues series

The School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) will host their latest Lunchtime Dialogue next week called “Reclaiming indigenous planning amidst natural resource development: critical dialogues and emerging best practice.” The talk aims to engage students planning research on activism, indigenous values and principles of sustainable mining. The discussion will focus on how indigenous communities can assert their use and stewardship of land and to take a value focused approach to natural resource development.
