Museum of Anthropology launches visiting scholar fund

The Museum of Anthropology’s Claude Lévi-Strauss Visiting Scholar Fund was launched Nov. 28 at a gala attended by the Ambassador of France for Canada, François Delattre.

The $100,000 fund supports visiting scholars to the Museum of Anthropology who are conducting research in areas including structural or symbolic anthropology, mythology, visual or performative culture, critical museology or in a similar area of arts practice.

The fund is the result of a $50,000 gift from Vancouver philanthropist Yosef Wosk, matched by contributions of $25,000 each from the UBC Faculty of Arts and the Museum of Anthropology.

New managing director announced for Faculty of Land and Food Systems

Grahame Brown has joined the Faculty of Land and Food Systems as the UBC Botanical Garden’s new Managing Director.

Brown has relocated from the U.K. where he was working in the areas of strategic business development and architectural consultancy.

Brown brings many years of experience in business planning along with environmental design, landscape architecture, ecology and arboriculture. Brown holds an MBA from Manchester Business School and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Sheffield and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture faculty and students receive awards

Students and faculty from the UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture have been recognized by the
Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

Students under the direction of Asst. Prof. Inge Roecker received the 2008-09 ACSA Collaborative Practice Award for their design and construction work for Lu’s Social Enterprise Pharmacy and Health Center. Their work will be presented at the ACSA Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon in March 2009.

Prof. Patricia Patkau is the Gold Medal recipient for 2009 and will be the keynote speaker for the ASCA Annual Meeting.

Civil engineering group participate in symposium in Shanghai

UBC’s Earthquake Engineering Research Group participated in the First Tongji and UBC Earthquake Engineering Symposium held in Shanghai on October 17-22.

UBC scholars included Prof. Dharma Wijewickreme, Prof. Perry Adebar, Prof. Carlos Ventura and Prof. Ken Elwood. Other UBC members included technical staff Felix Yao and Max Nazar, and graduate students Juan Carlos Carvajal, Bishnu Pandey, Otton Lara, Mehrtash Motamedi, Soheil Yavari, Hugon Juarez, Jose Centeno, Freddy Pina and Katherine Thibert. Also part of their group were Vancouver engineers Sharlie Huffmann and John Pao.

The group has invited Tongji University to Vancouver for the Second Tongji and UBC Earthquake Engineering Symposium on July 21, 2009.
