The Georgia Straight reported on research from UBC and McMaster which has developed a material based on plant cellulose which may be able to replace bone implants.
Emily Cranston, a UBC professor of wood science and chemical and biological engineering, explained that the implant should break down into harmless components in the body after the bones begin to heal.
