Several UBC professors were quoted in a Georgia Straight article about housing in Vancouver since a new NPA councilor has moved to reinstate the ban on duplexes.
UBC sociologist Nathan Lauster said that allowing duplexes offers a step forward to a more inclusive, vibrant and sustainable city.
Tom Davidoff, an economist at Sauder School of Business, tweeted, “Can you imagine your first big act as councilor in a housing crisis being to reenact exclusionary zoning?” Alex Hemingway, a public policy expert at UBC, agreed.
“The discussion a rational council would be having is how do we move towards building apartments in these areas, not how do we go back to detached only,” he said.
