The Dutch Reach: A no-tech way to save bicyclists’ lives

Oct 9, 2018

The New York Times mentioned a 2015 study by Kay Teschke, a professor emeritus at UBC’s school of population and public health. Teschke researched car-to-cyclist accidents and found that most injuries occur when a car door opens in the path of a cyclist.

The article describes the “Dutch Reach.” If drivers reach across their body to open their car door, it forces them to turn towards the side view mirror and look back over the shoulder to check for oncoming cyclists.
