Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, a law professor with the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC and inaugural director of UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, was quoted in a Canadian Press story about a woman who is fighting for her right to live and work in B.C. even though she was born on the American side of her traditional territory.
Turpel-Lafond discussed that border issues have most commonly arisen in Eastern Canada where communities such as the Akwesasne First Nation cross three borders between Ontario, Quebec and New York.
