Indigenous woman fights to stay in Canada

Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, a law professor with the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC and inaugural director of UBC’s Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, was quoted in a Canadian Press story about a woman who is fighting for her right to live and work in B.C. even though she was born on the American side of her traditional territory.

Turpel-Lafond discussed that border issues have most commonly arisen in Eastern Canada where communities such as the Akwesasne First Nation cross three borders between Ontario, Quebec and New York.

The CP story appeared in the Ottawa Citizen, on Huffington Post, National Observer, and Times Colonist.
