A Vancouver Sun op-ed by UBC’s Casey Chiu and Kai Chan discussed creating a whale sanctuary for retired cetaceans.
They wrote: “[A sanctuary] is a complicated project that needs careful planning to ensure the welfare of captive whales and protect local ecosystems.”
Chiu is an animal biology honours student at UBC and Chan is a professor in the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability and the Institute for Oceans and Fisheries at UBC.
