Christa Van Laerhoven, a UBC postdoctoral fellow of astronomy, spoke to CBC Radio’s Quirk and Quarks about how sounds like Saturn’s rings are recorded.
She said when we hear a recording of Saturn’s rings we are actually hearing radio waves, or data, that is represented as sound according to its frequency.
