Michael Byers, a professor of international law at UBC, spoke to the Globe and Mail after China used a research mission to test a trade route in Canada’s Northwest Passage.
Byers said the fact that Beijing sought Canada’s approval to enter the Arctic waters strengthens Ottawa’s sovereignty claims to the passage.
