A number of UBC experts gave comments to the media about the solar eclipse.
In an interview with the Canadian Press, astronomy professor Jaymie Matthews said it was unlikely that planets would be visible in Vancouver during the eclipse. The story appeared on CTV, Toronto Sun and Times Colonist.
Matthews also told Global the maximum eclipse will be seen from Metro Vancouver at 10:21 a.m.
Xueshun Liu, a lecturer in Asian studies at UBC, spoke to CBC (reposted on Yahoo) about how the human response to a solar eclipse has evolved through history. Liu has studied early Chinese eclipse records and said people used to fear the eclipses.
Christa Van Laerhoven, a post-doctoral fellow of astronomy, commented that total solar eclipses can happen on other planets if they have moons big enough and if conditions are right.
Metro News mentioned viewing parties at UBC’s Point Grey and downtown campuses for the eclipse.
